I'm touched by the vulnerability and honesty in this reflection. It's a reminder of the ups and downs of life and the power of gratitude. The writer's journey through hardship and finding moments of joy is inspiring. Excellent work! 🌟👏
Hey @Jean, I’m one of the founders of YearCompass, huge fan of your newsletter. Thanks for this year it was inspiring, and special thx from the YearCompass team for spreading the word 🙏🏼
Happy holidays Jean and congratulations on your pregnancy. My third child is now 9 months old so the "joys" of pregnancy are fresh in my memory. I hope everything goes smoothly and that you will be able to tell us about your adventures with a new little one in the home!
I came here to express gratitude for you and your column. It's so refreshing to read the thoughts of an engineering leader who isn't 100% tech and work focused. You are clearly a successful and inspiring tech leader, but you are so much more than that. You are a whole human being thoughtfully navigating the challenges of living in our world today.
Thank you for taking the time to write your column and best wishes for the coming New Year! 🥂
One topic I'd love for you to write about is hiring. I am a (fairly) confident and successful engineering manager of a small team at a big tech firm. I hate hiring and the main factor is that I never feel qualified to judge people based on the meager info in their resumes or the short interactions during an informational or interview. I tend to assume the best about everyone so even unorthodox projects and background in someone's resume make me curious, but it's impossible to probe into that for every resume especially now that remote work means you get applications from around the world.
I also don't get to practice hiring very often because of low attrition on my team and the state of the industry right now. I'd love to hear your insights on what you look for when hiring and what practices you've seen in your many positions that work well.

Thank you for the lovely note! I have thoughts on hiring to share, so thanks for the nudge!
Happy new year to you and your family as well.
